Health New Zealand has been found in breach of the Consumers' Rights code after a man was circumcised without his consent

Health New Zealand has been found in breach of the Consumers' Rights code after a man was circumcised without his consent

A consultant urologist, informed the man via a telehealth appointment, that once his surgery started, there was a chance circumcision would be required.

The man expressly stated he would not consent to full circumcision.

The operating surgeon, was a different person - and says usual treatment for his condition was a circumcision, so proceeded on that basis.

Deputy Health and Disability Commissioner Dr Vanessa Caldwell found the man's understanding differed from what was listed on the procedure consent form.

She made several recommendations, and Health New Zealand says it's made a number of changes.
