Waikato residents are being urged to stay out of the Ohinemuri River

Waikato residents are being urged to stay out of the Ohinemuri River

The water turned orange yesterday and people are being told to treat it as contaminated.

Regional council staff will be checking an old mine shaft in the Karangahake Gorge this morning, as a likely the source.

It's also tracking the plume of colour in the river - which it estimates will reach the Firth of Thames.
