Heavy rain and thunderstorms have lashed parts of the country but look to clear up just in time for Fathers Day

MetService issued several severe watches and warnings for the North Island, but they're due to expire early this morning.

Northpower's outage map shows unplanned cuts in the far north region, from Glinks Gully down to Pouto Peninsula - nearly 300 customers are affected.

Meteorologist Oscar Shiviti says heavy rain warnings remain in place the South Island's west.

He says most of the rain fell overnight but another front will bring more wet weather later on today.
