It could soon become easier for people to compare mobile providers and change between them

The Commerce Commission is requiring mobile network operators to standardise key parts of their coverage maps to make them more comparable, and make them easier to find on their websites.

It will also allow consumers to leave without a penalty, if providers don't deliver what they promise in their mobile plan.

Telecommunications commissioner Tristan Gilbertson says too many consumers were not getting the coverage they expected.

He says One NZ and 2degrees already offer this in the form of a 'network guarantee' for their new customers, but the commission wants to see this offered across the board.
