A devastating blow for more than 200 workers - as two North Island mills confirm closure

Winstones has announced its Ruapehu District pulp and saw mills will close indefinitely after more than 45 years in business.

It says they can't afford the high electricity princes required for production.

Ministers tried to intervene but Winstones says there was no viable way for them to remain open.

One worker says staff are gutted and disappointed - and feel let down by the decision.
