The 35-year-old is being replaced by Tom Latham with immediate affect, in the wake of the side's fourth straight defeat.

Southee says the move is in the best interests of the team, and allows him to concentrate on his bowling.

He says the decision was made after talks with coach Gary Stead.

Latham begins with the three-test series in India starting in a fortnight.
