The Meningitis Foundation believes a lack of education is the leading cause of cases in New Zealand

The Meningitis Foundation believes a lack of education is the leading cause of cases in New Zealand

At least 44 people have had meningococcal disease this year, with one death.

New Zealand will be leading a global "chain of light" to commemorate World Meningitis Day today - with several national landmarks lighting up purple.

Foundation chair Gerard Rushton says not enough people are aware of the disease.

He encourages people to know what the symptoms are because they can be similar to a cold or a hangover.
