    Former Kiwis forward now selector Tawera Nikau believes the current squad's injury crisis is due to the elongated NRL season

    Numerous players are unavailable for New Zealand, Australia and Tonga in league's Pacific Championships following the 27-round club season plus a month of playoffs.

    Australian Rugby League Commissioner Peter V'Landys has suggested the season could reduce to 19 rounds should the competition expand to 20 teams.

    Nikau says there are ongoing conversations around changing the format.
