Art Garfunkel broke down in tears during a reunion lunch with his longtime collaborator Paul Simon

Folk-rock duo Simon and Garfunkel officially split in 1970 and re-teamed for reunion shows over the years but the pair went on to fall out and they haven't shared a stage together since 2010 - and Art admits he "hurt" his friend by talking badly about him in interviews

During an interview with The Sunday Times newspaper, Art revealed he got emotional as they discussed their relationship over a recent lunch. He explained: "I actually had lunch with Paul a couple of weeks back. First time we'd been together in many years. I looked at Paul and said, 'What happened? Why haven't we seen each other?'

"Paul mentioned an old interview where I said some stuff. I cried when he told me how much I had hurt him. Looking back, I guess I wanted to shake up the nice guy image of Simon and Garfunkel. Y'know what? I was a fool!"

Art went on to reveal the pair are planning to meet up again and he's determined to "make amends before it's too late".

He said: "We've made plans to meet again. Will Paul bring his guitar? Who knows. For me, it was about wanting to make amends before it's too late.

"It felt like we were back in a wonderful place. As I think about it now, tears are rolling down my cheeks. I can still feel his hug."

It comes after Art admitted he missed his former school friend in a recent interview with The Telegraph newspaper and explained he'd love for them to be able to perform together again.

He said: "I miss Paul. Any difficulties are not worth clinging to, life is short, and the positive side of Simon and Garfunkel is there waiting to be related to. I would love to sing with him."

Art and his son Art Garfunkel Jr.'s new album, 'Father and Son', is out now.
