Fires are now banned throughout Canterbury, until further notice

The region's moved into a prohibited fire season, meaning no outdoor fires allowed, and all fire permits from north of the Rakaia River, to just south of the Clarence have been revoked.

District Commander Dave Stackhouse says it's on the back of sustained dry conditions and recent wildfires in Kirwee, West Melton and Bridge Hill.

He says the ban's in place to provide peace of mind for Cantabrians over the Christmas break.

The fire season status will be reviewed for some activities in January.
