Eva Longoria believes Laura Bush helped to put 'Desperate Housewives' "on the map"

The 49-year-old actress played Gabrielle Solis on the hit TV drama between 2004 and 2012 - but Eva has claimed that Laura, the wife of former US President George W. Bush, played a pivotal role in the show's success.

Jenna Bush Hager - the daughter of George and Laura Bush - told Eva on the 'Today' show: "Do you remember when my mom made that 'Desperate Housewives' joke?"

Eva - who is co-hosting the 'Today' show alongside Laura - then replied: "Yes, your mom put us on the map! Your mom said she was 'the ultimate desperate housewife!'"

Laura, 78, made the comment during her speech at the White House Correspondents' Dinner in 2005.

She said at the time: "I am married to the President of the United States and here's our typical evening - nine o'clock, Mr. Excitement here is sound asleep and I'm watching 'Desperate Housewives' with Lynne Cheney ... ladies and gentlemen, I am a 'Desperate Housewife'.

"I mean, if those women on that show think they are desperate, they ought to be with George."

Eva previously admitted that 'Desperate Housewives' "changed everything" for her.

The actress also confessed to being shocked by the show's global popularity.

She said on 'Today with Hoda and Jenna': "I just remember the first time I went to London, I had never been to London before and there was a big crowd of people outside the hotel, and I was like, 'Gosh, who's here? Is Bono here? Somebody important must be here!' And the driver was like, '... You...' And I was like, 'No, somebody like, big. Like a big deal!'

"And he didn't understand that I didn't understand. The global reach of that show, at the time where there was no streaming."
