A new global study's found about 40 percent of adults with chronic pain have anxiety or depression.
Women, young people, and those with certain types of chronic pain like fibromyalgia - tend to be most affected.
Otago University Pain Researcher, Bronwyn Lennox Thompson, says we shouldn't be splitting mental health off from physical health.
She says we need to help people with pain live life really well - with a team wrapped around them and peer support workers.
