Kidney conditions are a growing problem in New Zealand, affecting more than half a million of us

However, the condition often goes undiagnosed until it reaches advanced stages, when it's too late for early intervention.

The Ministry of Health doesn't recognise chronic kidney conditions as being separate to diabetes.

Kidney Society CEO Kath Eastwood says this means the condition doesn't get the attention it deserves.

She says there's no long term plan or strategy to stem that tide, and recognising it on its own and in health policy would make a big difference.
