The Treaty Negotiations Minister says the Government's trying to get the right balance - on the foreshore and seabed debate

It's expecting to pass legislation on the Marine and Coastal Areas Act by the end of October.

It follows the Supreme Court essentially overruling a Court of Appeal decision, which would've given iwi easier access to ownership and rights around the coastline.

Paul Goldsmith says iwi should get customary marine titles - if they pass a reasonable hurdle.

He says ultimately, they want to go further than the Supreme Court.
