An incident at Waikato's Springhill Prison has ended after going into lockdown

Corrections says eleven prisoners refused to leave an exercise yard, setting several small fires and damaging property at 3:30pm.

Custodial Services Commissioner Leigh Marsh says all the prisoners had exited the yard and were secured by 5:30pm.

The fires have been put out without injury after Fire and Emergency responded with eight vehicles.

Mr Marsh says Corrections will be carrying out a review of the incident and referring the matter to police.
