World Rugby have snapped back at criticism over their handling of the biting incident in the women's World Cup quarter-finals

French flanker Axelle Berthoumieu will sit for nine weeks after she bit Ireland loose forward Aoife Wafer in the quarter-finals.

The incident wasn't dealt with on the park, with the TMO unable to come up with a definitive finding.

Tournament director Yvonne Nolan says biting incidents are rare and require a mountain of evidence to determine properly.
