Firefighters are continuing to fight one large scrub fire in Canterbury, fuelled by strong winds and forestry slash

Two helicopters and multiple ground crews are trying to contain the 38-hectare fire, which has destroyed two sheds near Southbridge.

Another 10-hectare fire in Springfield's now under control, with a tanker and crew remaining on site.

MetService has issued a severe wind watch in Canterbury until tonight, with gale warnings in exposed places.
