Charlie Sheen has finally explained what happened when his former fiancee Kelly Preston was shot at his home

The Hot Shots star hit headlines back in January 1990 when the actress was injured in a shooting at his house in Malibu, California but no charges were ever brought in relation to the incident and Kelly always insisted it was an accident but the couple split shortly afterwards and the break-up fuelled rumours about what really happened.

Now Charlie has brushed aside decades of speculation by revealing the gun went off while Kelly was moving his clothes from the bathroom floor. He told The Independent newspaper: "I used to carry a little revolver in my back pocket in the Eighties.

Charlie added that one night he came home and he threw his clothes down on the bathroom floor before going to bed and the gun was still in the pocket of jeans - and the gun went off the following morning when Kelly went to move them.

He said: "Stupidly [I didn't empty the chamber] ... I didn't take the gun out of the back pocket ... "

The bullet bounced off the toilet bowl and Kelly was hit by shrapnel which left her in need of hospital treatment.

Charlie went on to say: "She gets hit with shrapnel in her calf and her wrist. I'm downstairs and hear this gunshot, like ... 'Holy f****** s***!'

"I come around the corner and she's already at the top of the stairs, holding her wrist above her head, but her wrist has now bled all over her.

"It was quite the image, right? I get her down the stairs. I'm soaking towels. I'm calling 911. And then that turned into 'Charlie Sheen shoots fiancee Kelly Preston'."

Charlie was full of regret after the incident and insists he never carried that gun again.

He added: "I felt terrible. I never carried that weapon again, because it could have been catastrophic. It was the universe giving me a pass - and her, more so."

Charlie and Kelly went on to end their engagement and the actress later tied the knot with Hollywood star John Travolta. Kelly died in 2020 at the age of 57 after a battle with cancer.

Charlie has laid bare his life story in new memoir The Book of Sheen and he told The Independent he deliberately left a lot of his experiences with Kelly out of respect to Travolta and their children.

He added: "We had so much fun. She was so f****** cool and f****** beautiful, and so funny and smart. But I was imagining John and their children reading that stuff and saying, like ... 'Dude, you weren't part of the stuff that really mattered.'

"I could have written a lot more about her. But, just out of respect, I didn't."
