Valerie Bertinelli has never been on a first date

The One Day at a Time actress - who was married to the late Eddie Van Halen from 1981 until 2007 and Tom Vitale from 2011 until 2022 - admitted none of her previous partners had ever formally asked her out before they embarked on a relationship so she has "no idea how it works" when it comes to taking the first steps of meeting someone.

Discussing the so-called 'Bob the Builder' relationship trend - in which people match on dating apps and ask for help with DIY tasks - on The Drew Barrymore Show, Valerie said: "I think it's a great idea. I think sometimes you wanna play a game or, I mean, I don't even know. I don't know. I've never been on a first date, so I have no idea how it works."

While Drew's News Desk co-host Ross Mathews was shocked by the revelation, the presenter wasn't.

Drew quipped: "That's because she goes straight to marriage."

Ross queried: "Wait, you've never been on a first date?"

Valerue confirmed: "No. No one's ever asked me out."

The presenter then asked: "You're Valerie Bertinelli. How the hell is that possible?"

But the 65-year-old actress insisted there was a simple explanation.

She said: "I got married at 20 and I was married for 20 some odd years."

She then explained how she had met late Jump rocker Eddie at one of his concerts and after he invited her to watch him perform again, they immediately embarked on a relationship.

Drew asked: "Do you remember like your first night with Ed? Was it an official date? Did you guys just meet somewhere?"

    Valerie explained:

"My brother Patrick, brought us to the concert that [Van Halen] were having in Shreveport, Louisiana.

"My parents lived out there, and we just made eyes and then we talked backstage and then we talked."

After the show, Eddie invited Valerie to see the band perform in Oklahoma.

She continued: "So Patrick and I went, and then we were together ever since. Eight months later, we were married."

Earlier this year, Valerie admitted she doesn't want her son Wolfgang Van Halen to authorise a movie about his father until after she dies.

Talking about the upcoming Beatles movies, Valerie said on The Drew Barrymore Show: "Oh god, I hope they never do one of Van Halen. Make sure I'm dead. I told Wolfie, 'Make sure I'm dead.' "

Drew quipped: "Oh you know they're gonna do one of Van Halen."

Despite the actress' reluctance for such a project, she already knows who she'd like to play her.

She said: "Oh... Selena Gomez. She would be amazing. But Selena, don't do it! Please don't do it!"

Drew agreed with her choice and noted they would have to "figure it out together" when the film is inevitably made.

    Valerie insisted: "I'll be dead."

The host argued: "No you won't!"
