Gloria Estefan turned down the chance to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show as she didn't want to "diet during Christmas"

The Rhythm Is Gonna Get You hitmaker was asked to join Jennifer Lopez and Shakira onstage for the halftime show in 2020 but said no as she wanted to indulge during the festive period.

Gloria - who previously performed at the halftime show in 1992 and 1999 - told the daytime talk show Sherri: "Jay-Z had asked me to join Shakira and JLo when they were there, it would have been my third time.

"First of all, they're already dividing up that time and it's really quick. It's like you're in and out. And secondly, I was going to have to diet during Christmas, and I really didn't want that. I did not."

The 68-year-old singer added: "You know what? It's their moment. Everybody has their moment. I had my moments, it all went well. I don't want to push my luck. The two times were great."

Bad Bunny has been announced as the headliner for the 2026 halftime show and Gloria is "so happy" to have witnessed the Puerto Rican star's rise to global stardom.

She said: "I think he's killing it this year.

"It's great. We need Latino representation. And the Latinos have burned up that show (during the Super Bowl).

"I've done it twice. First time in Minneapolis, it was freezing. I was shaking everything. They pulled me up in the air and I was afraid of heights at that time... I was dying. It was like 100 feet in the air, it felt like I was on the moon."

Meanwhile, Gloria recently suggested that "laughter" is the secret to her 47-year marriage to her husband Emilio.

Asked about the "key to longevity", the Conga artist told The Jennifer Hudson Show: "[He] makes me laugh every day, sometimes not even meaning to. He's a very funny dude."

Gloria took a moment to reflect on his proposal on February 12, 1978, when her now-husband "had the ring burning a hole in his pocket", and "couldn't wait" until Valentine's Day.

She awoke from a nap with Emilio and his mother both in the room, and he presented her with the engagement ring.

Estefan quipped: "I'm thinking, do I kiss you? Do I kiss your mother?"
