Michael Lohan has been released from prison early

The 65-year-old father of actress Lindsay Lohan was sentenced to nine months in jail after violating probation in his felony assault case in April but he has been let go 24 days early, a representative for the Palm Beach County Detention Centre in Florida told TMZ

Michael was eligible for early release after obtaining "gain time" by working as a trustee inmate while in prison.

Michael told TMZ in a statement: "I'm thankful for my early release and being reunited with my boys. This should have never happened. It was wrong! As usual, there's a lot more to the story than what's been reported. I'm just happy to be free and I'm sorry for the negative press it has caused my family."

Michael added that he is ready to move on and just wants "peace" for his family going forward.

Michael had been on probation after he was charged with felony continuous violence following his arrest for allegedly assaulting his estranged wife Kate Major.

Kate called 911 claiming that Michael had been following her, just days after alleging he had assaulted her by "flipping" her out of a chair at their home.

    That case remains pending.

The pair tied the knot in October 2014 but split in September 2018 when Major said in a court filing in Florida that the marriage had been "irretrievably broken".

She requested primary custody of their sons, Landon, 12, and Logan, 10, in addition to child support and alimony.

Michael also has four children with ex-wife Dina Lohan, 63: Lindsay, 39, Michael Jr., 37, Aliana, 31, and Dakota, 29.
