MetService has lifted all severe thunderstorm warnings - but an orange rain alert remains for eastern Bay of Plenty

A line of thunderstorms has been battering the upper and central North Island since last night.

It's brought heavy to torrential bouts of rain, causing flash and surface flooding - with a number of weather-related calls to emergency services, particularly in Orewa and Hamilton.

Some have reported frequent lightning and thunder.
