Alexander Skarsgard has addressed speculation about his sexuality after appearing to suggest he had "been with" both men and women in the past

Speaking at the Zurich Film Festival last year, about his role as charismatic biker gang leader Ray, who embarks on a dominant/submissive relationship with the younger Colin (Harry Melling) in Pillion, Skarsgard - who has a two-year-old son with girlfriend Tuva Novotny - left fans confused with his remarks.

According to Variety, he said at the time: "I found that in this case, it's not really relevant what my background is. I mean, I do have a kid, but what I've done in the past, who I've been with, men, women... To me, what was important was that this felt like an opportunity to tell a story about a subculture I hadn't seen portrayed this way - with so much authenticity."

However, he has now insisted that he was not making a revelation about himself, but was simply talking about the movie.

He explained to Variety in a new interview: "Oh. That it resonated with my past? It was definitely not an intended statement. I don't know what I was talking about. Maybe it has to do with - there's a lot of focus sometimes on me as an actor. Maybe it was trying to shift the focus more to the story and these characters. And the importance of telling the story like this."

When asked if he thinks Pillion is a love story, he said: "I don't want to answer that. I have thoughts on it. But I think it's a very relatable relationship story, with different beats of a relationship, except in a very specific subculture that's foreign to most people."

Skarsgard also revealed how life has changed for him since becoming a father, as he now prefers to be at home with his son rather than travelling for work.

He said: "Before parenthood, I lived on the road. I love that aspect of the industry - you're a traveling circus. But now, I need to balance that with family life and making sure I can be present for my kid. I can't be as selfish and narcissistic as I was before."
