    A conservative Islamic scholar with a head for politics, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei succeeded his mentor Ruhollah Khomeini in the wake of the Iran-Iraq War — and consolidated the Iranian Revolution's grip on power over the following decades.
