Missing out on the Tokyo Games caused Saunders to lose passion for the sport and eventually take a break - switching focus to training for and competing in an Ironman event.
But three years - after finding the "fun" again - Saunders says his selection for Paris in the ILCA 7 dinghy class is surreal.
Saunders joins Micah Wilkinson, Erica Dawson, Veerle ten Have and Josh Armit as the first five Kiwi sailors selected for this year's Games.
