    Brief forecast for the Mountains up to midnight on Saturday 27 July


    north island



    Raukumara to Kaweka ranges
    Mostly fine, with a few cloudy areas about the Raukumaras.

    Remaining North Island mountain areas
    Cloudy periods and the odd shower.

    WINDS
    West to northwest winds, strong about the Tararua range.

    FREEZING LEVEL
    About 3000 metres, lowering to 2500 metres this evening.


    south island



    Kaikoura ranges
    Fine with some high cloud.

    Kahurangi and Nelson Lakes National Parks, and the Southern Alps
    Cloudy with occasional rain about western areas. Mainly fine with high cloud in the east.

    Mount Aspiring and Fiordland
    Periods of rain with heavy falls. Snow lowering to 1800 metres.

    WINDS
    Gale northwesterlies about and south of Mount Cook, strong westerlies further north.

    FREEZING LEVEL
    About 2500 metres, sloping to 2000 metres in the south. Becoming 2000 metres everywhere this evening.
