    Brief forecast for the Mountains up to midnight on Wednesday 27 January


    north island


    Mainly fine and sunny. Areas of cloud at low elevations and in valleys morning
    and evening.

    WINDS
    Westerlies, rising to gale in exposed places about the Tararua Range.

    FREEZING LEVEL
    Well above 4000 metres.


    south island



    Kahurangi National Park, Nelson Lakes National Park and the Kaikoura Ranges
    Mainly fine. Some morning and evening cloud in the west.

    The Southern Alps
    Patchy drizzle west of the divide. Heavy rain spreading north in the evening.

    Fiordland
    Patchy drizzle, turning to heavy rain by midday, clearing in the evening, then a
    few showers.

    WINDS
    Northwesterlies, severe gale in exposed places.

    FREEZING LEVEL
    Well above 4000 metres. Lowering to 3000 metres about Mt Aspiring but 1800
    metres in southern Fiordland late.
