Sophie Turner is set to play Lara Croft in Prime Video's new Tomb Raider series

The 29-year-old actress - who is best known for playing Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones - has been confirmed as the new Lara Croft, after seeing off competition from the likes of Mackenzie Davis, Emma Mackey and Lucy Boynton for the role

    5 September 2025
Sophie said in a statement: "I am thrilled beyond measure to be playing Lara Croft. She's such an iconic character, who means so much to so many - and I am giving everything I've got."

Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander have both previously played the character in movies, and Sophie cannot wait to follow in their footsteps.

The actress is also looking forward to working with Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the show's creator, writer and co-showrunner.

She said: "They're massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands. I can't wait for you all to see what we have cooking."

Phoebe, 40, is similarly excited to be working on the new series.

She said: "I'm so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team.

"It's not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out - Croft is coming."

Meanwhile, Sophie recently revealed that she found filming Trust to be a "super cathartic" experience.

The actress was in the midst of her divorce during the film's shoot, and Sophie actually enjoyed being able to throw herself into the project.

Sophie - was married to pop star Joe Jonas between 2019 and 2024 - said on Late Night with Seth Meyers: "I'm not sure if anyone's aware, but when I started shooting this movie, I was going through, like, a media hell.

"So this was super cathartic because I wanted to run away in my real life when that was all happening. But I got to do it in a movie and I got to smash some s*** up, so that was fun."
