    Closing Southland's Tiwai aluminium smelter is back on the cards

    23 October 2019
    Rio Tinto, the owner of the country's largest electricity consumer is considering closure of the Bluff plant as part of a strategic review.

    The revelation comes from a Meridian Energy announcement to shareholders this morning.

    Meridian says the company's told them it will provide a market update by the end of next March.
