Charli XCX didn't think awards were "important" before she won Mastercard Album of the Year at the 2025 BRIT Awards

The 32-year-old pop star scooped the coveted award at the annual ceremony on Saturday (01.03.25) evening for her hit record 'Brat', having fought off competition from The Cure for 'Songs of a Lost World', Dua Lipa with 'Radical Optimism', Ezra Collective for 'Dance, No One's Watching' and The Last Dinner Party with 'Prelude to Ecstasy'

    5 March 2025
Speaking live on stage at London's O2 Arena, she said: "I used to tell myself that things like this weren't important, this kind of recognition, awards in general weren't important. And that was pretty easy for me to do because until last year I was literally never nominated for anything so now it's cool to not be in that position.

"I've always felt like an outside in the industry but in particular in the British music industry. It feels really nice to be recognised for this album when I haven't made any sacrifices."

The '360' hitmaker noted that she is "living proof" that no one needs to change themselves in order to succeed n the music industry but admitted that she is unlikely to ever do the same style of album again as she goes forward in her career.

She said: "I've been doing my own thing in the corner of the industry for a minute. I've never really changed that, I've worked with the same incredible people and we've always been doing our thing. I guess this time round, culture caught up with us and wanted to be on the journey with us and that's really amazing.

"I would just like to share this with all artists who have ever felt that they need to compromise to be regonised and to have their moment in the sun. I am living proof that, maybe it takes a long time, but you don't need to compromise your vision.

"It's the long road but if you do your own thing and you do it well, eventually, I think if you believe in yourself enough and you make good enough music then people will resonate with you and be right there with you. Thanks to all the people who have been with me all the way.

"I feel like it's in my instincts to not do the same thing twice, so I'll probably not make a record like this again, I'll reject it and do something completely different but that's the charm of being an artist."
