Madonna has reflected on her "miraculous" recovery from a bacterial infection

The 'Ray of Light' hitmaker was forced to postpone the beginning of her 'Celebration' world tour last June when she was taken "seriously" ill but she's expressed her gratitude that she has made a full recovery and enjoyed an "amazing" 12 months.

    9 July 2024
She reflected on Instagram alongside a series of Independence Day celebration photos: "A year ago today, I had just come home from the hospital after surviving a life threatening illness, I could barely stand in my backyard holding one sparkler.

"I made a miraculous recovery and had an amazing year.

"Thank you God. Life is beautiful! Happy 4th of July! (sic)"

Madonna's post showed she had celebrated 4 July at New York City's The Standard, High Line with friends including photographer Steven Meisel, Luar designer Raul Lopez and singer Arca.

The 'Material Girl' singer's manager, Guy Oseary, had announced the 'Celebration' tour would be "paused" when he revealed Madonna - who is mother to Lourdes, 27, Rocco, 23, David, 18, Mercy, also 18, and 11-year-old twins Stella and Estere - was seriously ill in hospital.

He said on 28 June: "On Saturday June 24, Madonna developed a serious bacterial infection which led to a several day stay in the ICU.

"Her health is improving, however she is still under medical care. A full recovery is expected.

"At this time we will need to pause all commitments, which includes the tour.

"We will share more details with you as soon as we have them, including a new start date for the tour and for rescheduled shows."

The 65-year-old star then spoke out for the first time the following month, in which she thanked fans for their "positive energy, Prayers and words of healing and encouragement" and apologised for the delay to her tour.

She wrote: "I have felt your love. I'm on the road to recovery and incredibly grateful for all the blessings in my life.

"My first thought when I woke up in the hospital was my children. My second thought was that I did not want to disappointment anyone who bought tickets for my tour.

"I also didn't want to let down the people who worked tirelessly with me over the last few months to create my show. I hate to disappoint anyone."

And during her concert in Brooklyn last December, Madonna told the crowd she was in "an induced coma for 48 hours" during her hospitalisation.

Shouting out a friend, she said: "There are some very important people in the room tonight that were with me at the hospital. There's one very important woman who dragged me to the hospital.

"I don't even remember; I passed out on my bathroom floor and woke up in the ICU ... She saved my life."
