    Marine Weather Situation and Forecast issued at 2030hrs Friday 16-May-2025 by MetService

    STORM for COOK

    Situation:
    A ridge of high pressure lies over northern New Zealand today, while northwesterlies affect the South Island. On Saturday, the ridge moves away to the east and northwesterlies strengthen over central and southern New Zealand, then a low and several fronts move onto the South Island later in the day. The low moves away southeast of New Zealand early Sunday, while an associated front moves northwards over central and northern New Zealand. Another front should move northwards over the South Island on Sunday, followed by southwesterlies and a ridge. On Monday, the front over the upper North Island moves away to the north, while the ridge spreads across central New Zealand. A trough should move across the South Island late Monday and early Tuesday, then weaken over the North Island later Tuesday.

    Forecast issued at 1631hrs Friday 16-May-2025
    Valid to 8 pm Friday for Wellington Harbour and the south coast from Sinclair Head to Baring Head.
    Gale warning.
    Friday: Northerly 15 knots but 20 knots about the harbour entrance and south coast. Rising to 25 knots gusting 35 knots in the south late evening. Sea becoming rough about the harbour entrance and south coast. Mainly fine. For the South Coast and Palliser Bay - Southerly swell 1 metre, easing to half a metre. For Castlepoint - Southerly swell 1.5 metres, easing to 1 metre. Easterly swell half a metre, dying out.
    Saturday: Northerly 15 knots, but 25 knots gusting 35 knots about the south coast. Rising to northerly 20 knots gusting 35 knots but 25 knots gusting 40 knots about the south coast in the morning. Rising to northerly 35 knots gusting 50 knots everywhere in the evening. Sea becoming very rough in the evening. Fair visibility in afternoon and evening showers. For the South Coast and Palliser Bay - Southerly swell half a metre. For Castlepoint - Southerly swell 1 metre.

    Outlook until midnight Tuesday:
    Sunday: Northerly 35 knots, easing to northwest 15 knots in the morning.
    Turning southerly 15 knots in the afternoon. Rain, easing. For the
    South Coast and Palliser Bay - Southerly swell half a metre, rising
    to 1 metre. For Castlepoint - Southerly swell 1 metre.
    Monday: Southerly 15 knots, easing to variable 5 knots early. Becoming
    northerly 15 knots late. Occasional rain, clearing. For the South
    Coast and Palliser Bay - Southerly swell rising to 2 metres. For
    Castlepoint - Southerly swell rising to 2 metres.
    Tuesday: Northwest 15 knots, turning southerly 15 knots early. Partly cloudy.

    For the South Coast and Palliser Bay - Southerly swell 2 metres. For
    Castlepoint - Southerly swell 2 metres.
