    Marine Weather Situation and Forecast issued at 0130hrs Monday 20-Jan-2025 by MetService

    Gale warning for BRETT

    Situation:
    A strengthening, moist easterly flow affects northern North Island today, while a ridge affects the rest of the country. On Tuesday an intense low develops in the far north and the moist easterly flow spreads over the remainder of the North Island, while the ridge remains over the South Island. A ridge covers the South Island. On Wednesday the easterly flow over the North Island turns southeast and weakens while a front moves east onto the southwest of the South Island. The front in the south weakens on Thursday as a ridge of high pressure moves onto the country.

    Forecast issued at 2247hrs Sunday 19-Jan-2025
    Valid to 1 am Monday for The Bay of Islands and inshore waters from Cape Brett to the Poor Knights Islands to Bream Head.
    Strong wind advisory.
    Monday: Easterly 25 knots gusting 35 knots, rising to 30 knots gusting 40 knots this afternoon. Sea rough. Poor visibility in periods of rain with possible thunderstorms north of Cape Brett. Northeast swell 2 metres.

    Outlook until midnight Thursday:
    Tuesday: Easterly 25 knots, becoming northerly 15 knots in the morning. Easing
    to variable 5 knots in the evening. Rain, clearing. Easterly swell 3
    metres easing.
    Wednesday: Variable 5 knots, becoming southeast 10 knots early. Mostly cloudy,
    with a few showers developing. Northeast swell 2 metres easing.
    Thursday: Southerly 10 knots. A few showers developing. Easterly swell 1 metre.
