    Gale warning for PORTLAND

    Situation:
    A strong southwest flow covers Aotearoa/New Zealand on Thursday, with unsettled weather in many areas. The strong southwesterlies slowly ease during Friday as a high pressure system over the Tasman Sea moves closer to the country. During Saturday, a high lies over most of the country. The high moves north on Sunday and Monday, while a front moves onto the southern South Island, bringing rain and strong winds.

    Forecast issued at 1639hrs Thursday 21-Nov-2024
    Valid to 8 pm Thursday for Inshore waters between Cape Kidnappers and Portland Island.
    Strong wind advisory.
    Thursday: Southwest 25 knots gusting 35 knots. Sea rough. Poor visibility in scattered showers, possibly heavy with thunderstorms. Southerly swell half a metre developing.
    Friday: Southwest 25 knots gusting 35 knots, rising to southerly 30 knots gusting 40 knots for a time in the morning. Easing to southerly 15 knots early afternoon and then to variable 5 knots late afternoon. Westerly 15 knots developing in the evening. Rough sea easing early afternoon. Poor visibility in showers, clearing to fine around midday. Southerly swell rising to 2 metres.

    Outlook until midnight Monday:
    Saturday: Westerly 15 knots, changing southerly 15 knots in the morning. Rain
    developing. Southerly swell 1 metre.
    Sunday: Southerly 10 knots, easing to variable 5 knots early. Becoming
    northeast 15 knots later. Partly cloudy. Southerly swell rising to 2
    metres for a time.
    Monday: Northerly 10 knots, turning easterly 10 knots early. Changing
    northwest 15 knots later. Fine. Southerly swell 1 metre.
